Book Sale 2012
More than 90,000 books and periodicals for $2 or less
Open to the public
from Saturday, April 28th to Sunday, May 6, 2012
from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
This year, our Annual Book Sale will be held at:
Aréna Etienne-Desmarteau
3430 Bellechasse Street
(two blocks east of St. Michel Blvd.)
The bulk of the books and magazines on sale come from Montréal public libraries. Most documents on sale are in French, but we usually showcase between 12,000 and 15,000 English books. We may also have foreign language books, and a few audio tapes, CDs, CD-ROMs, and DVDs.
Everyday of the sale week, we will add thousands of new documents on the arena’s tables, to replace the ones that have been sold.
Plus, we accept book donations from the public during the sale only. Anybody who is interested will have the opportunity to bring their books to the arena any day of the sale, except Saturdays and Sundays.
Objectives:
The sale’s objectives are to extend the useful life of these books, help spread the joy of reading, and allow Montréal citizens to develop their personal libraries, at a minimum price. Amounts collected at this sale will be reinvested in the funding of animated activities in Montréal public libraries.
Price:
Documents sold at a very low price:
$2.00: Comic books, and dictionaries.
$1.00: Adult’s books, and if applicable, CDs, CD-ROMs, and DVDs.
$0.50: Children’s books, journals, magazines and audio tapes. Please note that we reserve the right to limit quantities a person can buy of certain documents.
Also note that the sale is not intended for booksellers or other resellers.
Volunteers:
The book sale is made possible, thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, of which the majority are members of the "Amis de la Bibliothèque de Montréal". "Amis de la Bibliothèque de Montréal" Evening:
As usual, we will be holding the, "Amis de la Bibliothèque de Montréal Evening" the day preceding the sale, on Friday, April 27th. This special evening linked to the book sale is reserved to members in good standing of the "Amis de la Bibliothèque de Montréal", who will need to show their invitation as well as their membership card at the door.
Donation Day:
Always aiming at making these books available to as many people as possible, on the day following the sale, we will invite many non-profit associations and community groups to come and chose, among the unsold books, the ones that interest them for their library, and we will give them for free.
Finally, anything remaining after these donations will be given to the Fondation des parlementaires – Cultures à partager, an organization mainly focused on distributing books to developing countries (mainly in francophone Africa and Haiti). This foundation also recycles the paper coming from those books that cannot be distributed or used otherwise.
